CLPE and The Power of Reading

At St Andrew's, we use the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE) Power of Reading approach to engage children with high-quality texts and develop their comprehension skills. Through this approach, children explore rich and diverse stories, deepening their understanding of language, themes, and character development.

Our teachers systematically teach the key skills needed for reading comprehension, including:

  • Understanding vocabulary in context – exploring how words are used within a text to enhance meaning and comprehension.
  • Forming a literal understanding – identifying key events and details.
  • Summarising – condensing the main ideas of a text.
  • Inferring – reading between the lines to understand deeper meanings.
  • Predicting – anticipating what might happen next based on evidence in the text.

These skills are developed through teacher modelling, whole-class guided reading sessions, and collaborative discussions, where children explore texts together. This approach fosters a love of reading while equipping children with the strategies they need to become confident, independent readers.

By immersing children in high-quality literature, the Power of Reading approach not only enhances their comprehension but also inspires creativity, discussion, and a deeper appreciation of books.
