Meet the Year 3 Team

Mr Callard loves teaching and getting to know how the children in his class learn best. His particular passion is reading and writing and he is thrilled to explore texts and worlds through texts with children. The children's imaginations light up the worlds that we visit, and their writing helps us to find ourselves. Prior to education, Mr Callard worked in publishing.

He is joined in Year 3 by a committed, qualified and enthusiastic team, Miss Snell, Mrs James and Mrs Bentley.

What to Expect in Year 3

Year 3 marks an exciting transition as children move into Key Stage 2. It’s a year of developing independence and building on the foundations laid in the earlier years. In Year 3, children focus on becoming more fluent in both reading and writing. As their reading skills develop, they begin to use books and texts not only for enjoyment but as tools to learn across the curriculum. This is a key stage in their educational journey, where they begin to apply their reading to subjects like history, science, and geography, deepening their understanding and broadening their knowledge. Throughout the year, children take on more responsibility for their learning, becoming confident in their abilities and excited to explore new ideas. Year 3 is a time of growth, where curiosity is nurtured, and children start to see the connections between different areas of their learning.

The Year 3 Curriculum

The Year 3 curriculum at St Andrew’s offers a range of exciting and engaging topics that capture children’s curiosity and inspire a love of learning. In history, pupils explore the fascinating period from the Stone Age to the Iron Age, discovering how early humans lived, worked, and developed. In geography, Year 3 dives into the concept of energy, with a particular focus on sustainable energy sources, helping children understand the importance of protecting our planet for the future. Alongside these engaging topics, children develop their skills in other subjects, such as English, mathematics, geography, and art, making connections across the curriculum. The Year 3 curriculum is designed to challenge, inspire, and equip children with the knowledge and skills they need for the next stage of their education.
