Year 6
Meet the Year 6 Team
Welcome to Year 6!
I’m Miss Clanchy, the Year 6 class teacher, and I’ve been part of St Andrew’s for five years, with the last two spent teaching this fantastic year group. I love working with Year 6, especially watching them take on new responsibilities and prepare for their transition to secondary school. I’m always so proud of their achievements, from working hard for their SATs to coming back and sharing their successes in secondary school!
One of the things I love most about teaching Year 6 is exploring our broad and exciting curriculum. We get creative with Art, from printing and drawing to painting, and we take on hands-on projects in DT, like making toys and sewing bags. In History, we dive into fascinating topics such as the Vikings in Britain and Early Islamic Civilisation, while in Geography, we explore Trade, Biomes, and even the incredible Galápagos Islands. There’s always something new and engaging to discover!
We are also lucky to have Ms Davies, who teaches Science and RE. She is an experienced Middle School and Primary School Science teacher, working across KS2, and has taught Year 6 for many years at St Andrew’s. Her passion for Science and deep subject knowledge inspire our students to think critically and explore the world around them, while her engaging RE lessons encourage thoughtful discussions and reflection.
Supporting our learning every day are our wonderful Teaching Assistants—Mrs. Johnson, Ms. Kanako, and Ms. James. Their dedication is invaluable in helping every child feel encouraged, challenged, and confident in their learning.
Together, we create a positive and engaging classroom where every child is supported to thrive in their final year of primary school.
What to Expect in Year 6
Year 6 is a truly special time at St Andrew’s. As the oldest children in the school, our Year 6 pupils take on important responsibilities, such as being a "lunch-bite listener" or a "hi-viz helper" at lunchtimes, or undertaking duties such as setting up for assemblies or taking the lunch trolleys down to the canteen. Year 6 children are expected to set an excellent example for the younger years, living out our Christian vision of Everyone is different; everyone is special. They work hard, achieving highly across the curriculum while also preparing for the transition to secondary school—developing the independence, resilience, and confidence they will need for the next stage of their education. Through their leadership roles and daily interactions, they show care, respect, and kindness, demonstrating that everyone is our neighbour. But Year 6 isn’t just about hard work! There is plenty of fun to be found throughout the year, but the final term in particular is packed with exciting events, from putting on a production to a week-long residential and a range of special activities. It’s a year full of challenge, growth, and unforgettable memories, where children truly shine as the best versions of themselves.
The Year 6 Curriculum
At St Andrew’s, our Year 6 pupils continue to access a broad and balanced curriculum throughout their final year. While we support them in preparing for their SATs, we are committed to ensuring that their learning experience remains rich and varied. Alongside core subjects, children enjoy a full curriculum, including art, music, PE, French, computing, and humanities. Engaging topics, hands-on learning, and opportunities for creativity ensure that Year 6 remains exciting and inspiring. Our approach means that children leave St Andrew’s not only well-prepared for their assessments but also equipped with the knowledge, skills, and curiosity they need for secondary school and beyond.
